INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
"AUSTRALIAN & N.Z. PAI)I.E ASSOCIATION] FRESH MELBOURNE CASES. MELBOURNE, Jan. 27. Ten fresh cases of influenza are reported here and two deaths.. N.S.W. PROCLAIMED INFECTED. SIDNEY, January 27. The Board of Health haa finally decided that pneumonic influenza has obtaised a footing in N.S.W. A committee visited Raudwick i.aspital and [diagonised. suspicious cases, all of which were contracted in Melbourne. The director of quarantine has officially notified to that effect. He has requested the Government to proclahn the State infected. Schools, theatres, picture shows and other indoor amusements will bo closed from to-morrow. S.O.S. Cards o n New Zealand lines arc being distributed. All steamer passengers from Melbourne are being medically examine J. A Red Cross campaign to combat the scourge has commenced. Masked V.A.IL’s are patrolling certain districts and distributing literature.
SOLDIERS INTERRED. FALSE REPORT CIRCULATED. WELLINGTON, January 27. Some people arc circulating a report that the number of people given out as having been interred in Karori cemetery during November and December did not include the soldiers who died iin Wellington during those months. The Mayor stated to-day that during November, 99 soldiers were interred in the memorial cemetery and 611 civilians in the ordinary cemetery, a total of 710 for the month. In Decemb *r the numbers were 10 soldiers and 1.22 •civilians interred. The figures aic those for the whole of Wellington Mid suburbs, this side of Pctone.
EPIDEMIC-FIGHTERS. CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. The (certificates wljtch the Public Health Department is having prepared for presentation to those who took an active part in the campaign of November and December against influenza, will shortly he ready for presentation. Hon. Mr Russell to-day stated the printers were working on the certificates “In many districts the proposal is received with great satisfaction,” -'aid the Minister, “and from the head ot the Dunedin citizens organisation, I have received the names of nearly two hundred and fifty persons to whom it is desired that the certificates should be presented.” _ * • Mr Russell expressed the opiniomthat no one would feel insulted by the oIU-i of the reward. If some didn’t wish it they had only to say so and there would he an end of the mottoi as far as they were concerned.
