MINISTER INITIATED INTO TWO-UP.
HIS VIEWS ABOUT HORSE-RACING The Rev. It. B. S. Hammond, president of the Temperance Alliance, when called as a witness at the Sydney Central Police Court to testify to a man’s character was asked whether ho believed that the man played two-up. “If you tell me he did play at the game, I would say that lie was qualified ,for ißandwick raceourse and other places where the Governor and .other prominently respectable people go, said Mr Hammond, “and where gambling in without hindrance.” “Do you know- what I mean,” said iPiJosecuiting-Sergeant White. “Toss-ing-up pennies, called heading ’em, or two-up!’’ “I know all about it I’’ said the minister with a smile; “I’ve been initiated. And I quite believe that the people who play two-up would object to being associated with the people who play bridge or go to Raudwick racecourse where gambling reigns supreme.” “Oh!” gasped the prosecuting sear-ge-ant. 0 “After'having been used to the fairness of two-up,” continued Mr Hammond, “I’m not surprised at the twoup players being against the Raudwick and drawing-room forms of gambling.”
