CAPTAIN SEDDON'S MISSION.
TRADE PROSPECTS WITH AMERICA.
AUCKLAND, January 21. Captain T. E- Y. Seddon, AI.P. returned by the Ruuhino yesterday. Interviewed regarding his visit to America Capt. Seddon said : “After speaking in New Jersey for war savings, j was put on t.o work with the United States Shipping Board. I spoke at the Brooklyn Shipping Yards at Philadelphia and at the New York Shipbuilding Yards. Then I was transferred to Chicago, and spoke of monster meetings of workers for the Government in Michigan, .. inconpiu, lowa, Indiana, and Nebraska. Most of the meetings were outdoor gatherings and after singing “America,” the men took the oath of loyalty to the President of the * ailed States. It was a very remarkable sight to look at the thousands of up-turned faces and the hands of the men held up as they swor? their allegiance. After I had finished with the Shipping Board , was with the National Security League, the president being Dr Preston, ol priiicestown University. I followed Major Beith (lan Hay), visiting and addressing meetings in North Dakota and .Minnesota and from there went on to the Pacific Coast, where I was speaking for the fourth liberty loan in the States of Washington, Oregon and California. In the Middle West and West I found a very keen desire existed to learn everything possible, about the colonies. The people there seem to be very well disposed towards us. U I would be a matter worthy of eonsideraI tion of the Government whether trade could not he encouraged there with New Zealand. In various Chambers of Commerce on the. Western States men: was an earnest desire manifested to crept,. the friendliest relationship's with us. It- seems to me that now is the time for those interested in trade to open up business in the Western States.
