The “Christchurch Press” of Friday says: We have good grounds for stating that the story., related in the message from Sydney about the collision of the New Zealand and Australia in the North Sea, sent from Sydney is inaccurate in tho main detail : it was IT.M.S. New Zealand that was rammed by H.M.A.S. Australia. There are officers at present in New Zealand who saw 11.M.5. New Zealand alter the collision, and one of them states that she was badly knocked about by the impact of the Australia. Captain Hall-Thompson, accompanied by Petty Officer West, on Wednesday week exploded the German mine foimu on Wairougomai (Otaki) recently. The spectacle was witnessed by a large number of people. The explosion was plainly beard several miles off, and at Otaki township, a distance of four to five miles houses shook, and windows rattled. Mr A. J, Knocks carefully took measurements of the hole made by the explosion, and found the circumference was no less than 84ft-, the diameter 25ft. and the depth loft. Fragments of the easing of the mine were hurled in various directions and many of the pieces were sent about 800 yards. There was a rush for fragments which will serve as mementoes.
A Wellington correspondent says that Sir Joseph is taking some, pains to dissociate himself from the ‘‘Nation Party” proposal, and in doing so seems to have the approval of a large majority of his political friends. The story whispered about, after the publication of the resolution adopted at the Reform Caucus was that the two party leaders had put their heads together aim devised a scheme for th,> perpetuation of the party truce. But both Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward have denied ,any collusion towards this end. As a matter of fact, Sir Joseph knew nothing about the proposal till he saw it in print, nnd it may be assumed that Mr Massey, though observing the spirit of the truce is not in tho habit of taking his colleague on the other side of politics into his confidence with regard to the proposals he makes to his friends.
