Enquiries show that a number of members of the House will strongly oppose any proposal for the payment of compensation to the liquor trade in any licensing poll, (says Friday’s Wellington “Post). In his replies to recent deputations, Sir Joseph Ward has indicated that the compensation issue has influenced his attitude in this matter. It is known that a solid proportion of mem hers will insist on the inclusion of compensation on the ballot paper. Sir Joseph Ward’s replies to recent deputations have indicated unmistakably that he is favourable to compensation in accordance with the Efficiency Board’s recommendations. Therefore the evidence points to a protracted, controversy on the liquor issue.
