OBITUARY.
"Comrade” Dowd a 11, tlie well-known Socialist, died 'in r Wellington hospital from influenza last week.
The death is reported front Wanganui of sir W;n. Stanelion. a brother of Mrs G. J. Roberts of Ilokitka, as a result of the prevailing epidemic.
News has been received of the death of Mrs Haszard, wife of Mr. Hasnard, a former Commissioner of Crown Lands at Hokitika, which took place at Invercargill.
Private news was received yesterday of the death at Now Plymouth of Mr. Hugh N. MeWhirter, front the prevailing epidemic. He was a native of Timartt and 38 years of age. He leaves a widow, (nee Miss Lottie Harker of Hokitika), and one daughter, live years of age. Mrs MeWJiirter was recently a visitor to Hokitika on a holiday visit.
The many friends of Mr. Phillip Martin, manager of the West Coast Dairy Company, will regret to hear that he succumbed to an attack of pneumonic influenza. The deceased, who was thirty-five years of age, came to Greymouth from the Rongotea Dairy Factory, some four years ago. He was a married in an with, three children. Om* sister lives at Pahietea and another at Feilding. -Miss Dora Pring, the third youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Pring, Greymouth. died on Wednesday morning at the Grey River Hospital, (St. Columba Rooms) from pneumonic influenza. A most pathetic feature of this case is that the deceased young lady had been .nursing some other unfortunate sufferers, and it was while attending to these that she contracted the disease.
The death took place on Wednesday oi Miss Mollie O’Connell at her parent’s residence Rtmanga. The deceased, who had been in failing health lor some months past, was a patient at the Grey River Hospital, but was removed thence to her home a few days ago. Mollie was eighteen years of age and had been a pupil at the Convent •School, where her amiable disposition made her a general favourite. She leaves, besides her parents, four sisters and three brothers to mourn her loss. Air William Tottenham, carrier, one of the land marks of Westport, passed away on Tuesday morning, a victim to the prevailing epidemic. Deceased, who was extremely popular, with a ready smile and a cheering word for everyone, will he greatly missed. A native of Portland, Victoria, Australia, where he was born in 1862, ho came with his parents to Westport in 1867, and later took over the carrier business which his father Air Joseph Tottenham had founded in 1872. He is survived by a sorowing wife, son, and daughter.
'fhc funeral of the late Rifleman Thomas' Winchester took place to Hokitika cemetery this morning, deceased being accorded a military funeral. The military parade was under Major Jeffries, Lieutenant Parkhill and SergeantMajor Green of Greymouth also being present and there was a fair muster of Territorials, Cadets and Returned Soldiers. The Rev. C. L. AVilson of Ross conducted the service, the Territorials providing,, the firing party and Bugler Ttoss sounding ‘ The Last Post.”
The death of Air Alielinel Devancy, third son of Air and Airs Thomas Devaney of the Club Hotel, Revcll Street, which took place yesterday afternoon about 3 o’clock removes a young man just, on the thrcaliold of life. He was a native of Hokitika and 21 years of age and has been in the employ of Mr I. Brown of the Hokitika Cycle Work. One brother is on active service and a younger one is at home also suffering from the epidemic which caused the death of deceased. A father, mother and two sisters are also left to mourn their loss.
The death of Air. James Rugg, senr., took place at Christchurch yesterday at the residence of his late daughter, (Airs Rrown), who had passed away on Sunday last. Deceased came to the Coast in 1865. He followed tiie rush to Greenstone, and later settled in Kumarii, where lie conducted Rugg’s Hotel and the wellknown eoaheing business for many years, retiring from active life a feuyears ago and residing at Greymouth, a few months ago leaving for Christchurch to reside with his late son Thomas. He was 87 years of age. His remaining sons and daughters are— James (Christchurch), Charles( Greymouth), AVilliam (Qtira), David (India), Caroline (Airs AVylde. Greymouth). and Alice (Airs Harcourt, Hokitika). There are also numerous grand and great grandchildren, and ninny other relatives to whom the sympathy of all will he oxtended.
