Tlie progress of the Allied forces across the plain has been more in the nature of a military parade than of serious warfare. Demoralisation of the Turks has enabled the Allies to wrest the last Syrian villayet of their dominion at the cost- of exceedingly light casualties • The Turks occupied a position a few miles south-west of Aleppo. After shelling and feint work, covering three days they were driven from their advanced post and began to evacuate the town, . firing their stores and supply dumps ' on the evening of October 25th. Arab villagers assisted by Aineysah tribesmen, attacked the enemy on the flank, and penetrated Aleppo after bitter fighting, killing five hundred Turks, j ' The British forces entered the city next day, "and were nceorded an eni thusiastic welcome by all classes. I The retreating Turks were overtaken on the Alexandrettia road. A force 1 of Indian and Cape of Good Hope Lancers ! with fine impetuosity charged right , through the enemy. The latter were 1 over three thousand strong. At first they threw up their hands and surrendered, but on seeing the smallnoss of the attacking force, they reopened « heavy fire at close range, causing casualties. The Indians charged back into safety. 'Hie enemy was pursued northwards by cavalry and armoured cars. The nearest rearguards, ' over twenty 7 six miles away, were reported at the latest to be still pressing northward, having been joined by forces which retired from Mesopotamia.
