FINANCE COMMITTEE i MEETING. The Finance Committee (town members) of the Westland County Counoil sat at the County Chambers ( yesterday afternoon under the presidency of the Chairman, Mr B. Ward, to deal with interim business arising during tbe period of the bimonthly meetings. The accounts for October were presented, amounting to £61!) 1 7/6, and after examination were passed for payment, ' Donnellys Creek bridge matter was further considered. It was reported the estimated cost of this work was in the region of £650. The Public Works Department, which had approved now of the plaris, offered £4OO towards the work. Of the remainder, the Ross .Borough Council had been asked to find £IOO spread over two financial years, or to contribute £1 for every £1 10/found by the County Council. The Ross Borough offered £SO in the first instance, and subsequently increased the amount to £/5. This had been declined and reconsideration on the terms of the County offer had been invited, but the Ross Council declined to further increase their grant beyond £75. The Committee yesterday resolved to let, the matter drop, and recommends the Conuty Council to take no further action in the matter. Ward Road Contract—This wa s transferred by the contractors, Messr s Rooney and McFadyen, to the Westland Gold Mining Syndicate, and the transfer was approved. Instead of a track as originally specified, the Syndicate purpose constructing a road for the greater part of tbe distance, without any additional cost, to the local body. Mt Brown Track, Upper Arahnra — Repairs were authorised to the track which serves for access to mining works in the locality in connection with important developments taking place there. The cost was limited to £25 pending result of application to Mines Department for a grant of £125. Waitangi Road Extension. —A. Richardson, one of the holders of a section on the Education Reserve, asked for an extension of the roacl for a distance of seven chains to serve the milking sheds, ft was resolved to communicate with the Public Works Department which had the work in hand, and ask that the extension be provided for while the workmen are on the ground. Education Reserve Erosion at Little Wanganui.—Overseer Millner reported that valuable land to a considerable area was being destroyed by the river, and recommended an expenditure of £2OO to check the damage and assist to regain the land. It was resolved to forward a copy of the report to the Minister of Lands whose department was administering the area. Timber Reservation at Seddon’s Terrace for Mining Purposes.—With regard to the application of Stuart & Chapman for leave to cut out portion of the reserve which was not considered available or needed for mining purposes, a report was received from the Overseer indicating that there was estimated to he one million feet in the area proposed to he cut out, and there would remain thereafter for |,he use of the miners, not less than three million feet of timber on the hill. It was resolved to recommend the Mines Department to favorably ; consider the application of Stuart & Chapman. Electric Power Line to Back Creek, —The Public Works Department forward a copy of the draft license to issue for this work. It was resolved there was no objection to same, subject to all requisite safeguards being taken for public safety, Malfroy & Coy applied for leave to construct, a tramway up Arahura Valley, along Humphreys road, from the present road crossing near Malfroy's bridge. It, was agreed, after discussion, to consent to this being done under the usual conditions and safeguards, subject to the applicants making the necessary arrangements with the settlers affected along the loute. The meeting then terminated.
