A French communique states tin First Army during the morning, attack ed in conjunction with tho British or the Sambre-Oise Canal between Ois< and Vandeneourt. Despite difficulties ol crossing the canal and the stiffest onPiny resistance we everywhere forced the crossings and gained a footing on the heights on the eastern bank and reached the outskirts of villages about Lacauteete, Daneuvillc-les-Doiengt. We passed Lesquilles realising a maximum advance of three kilos, and captured over three thousand prisoners and lo guns. We completed the occupation ot the south bank of Ardennes Canal, between Semuy and Lesthesne, the enemy resisting vigorously on the, northern bank. , Since Nov. Ist 53 guns were captured in this region. AMERICAN SUCCESS. (Received This Day at, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 5. An American comnnmiquo says the First Army continued to advance on the •entire front between the Meuse, bar the -extreme right, and drove the enemy in (the valley, of the Meuse and fought ■through the forest of Diclet and occupied Laneuville, opposito an important {crossing of the Meuse near Stenay. We seized Beaumont Stenay and reg AVe seized Beaumont Stenay and 'heh'hts Overlooking Beaumont. Our left reached GrandesarMoises, despite vigorous opposition. The enemy abandon,ed much material. One hundred and forty-five aeroplanes bombed crowded enemy traffic at Montmedy and destroyed thirty-enemj •aeroplanes. Several American machines .are missing. OFFICIAL NEWS. WELLINGTON, This Day.
