The funeral of the late Air Jacob Unger of Woodstock took place this morning and was attended by many friends. The Rev. Father Clancy eonducted the services at St. Alarv’s church and the graveside. The time is short now and a full attendance is necessary. .Mr Levvey, S.M., shortly takes over the West Coast circuit, Air. Wilson S.M. going to Auckland. Air Levvey will be succeeded at Nelson by a nephew of the Chief Justice, Mr. J. Logan Stout, S. M., now in Otago. The 'roan Band paraded the town last evening and rendered a selection of patriotic music at various points in honor of the good war news received during the day. The appearance of the band was appreciated very much by many ot the citizens. At Wellington yesterday in to a request of a deputation of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union for the removal of the Mortgage Tax, Sir Joseph Ward said that ii he agreed to such a suggestion lie would lie obliged to impose an Export Tax, to which lie was opposed. Sir Joseph AY ard stated at AVellingtoo yesterday that at the end of the war the Dominion would probably owe £200,00(1,000, in addition to her ordinary indebtedness. AA'lien the war was over the Dominion would be probably the lowest taxed portion of the .Empire and possibly the strongest financially. Pollard’s Pictures at the Princess Theatre last evening presented a capital programme. The King’s visit to the Navy was an interesing one, many scenes of great interest being shown, winding up with a fine picture of over two thousand sailors giving three cheers, the beautiful rhythm of their actions making a most impressive scene. The star feature showed Eth I Clavton in “The Fads of Society” an interesting drama of a factory girls life. The gazette as usual was a very interesting one. Mrs G. J. Roberts in charge of the produce stall of the graft d sale of work iit the Town Hall on the 13th inst, would be glad of gifts o£ all kinds for the occasion in question—to help with the patriotic work of supplying gifts to the boys til the front. The present will be most probably one of the last efforts necessary, and it ds hoped to have a bumper response. For gifts from the Kokatalii district, Air Alaokle.v, has offered to kindly deliver the goods free in Hokitika. Contributions for the purpose in hand may he left either tit. the residence of Airs Roberts, or at the County Office. Tn-ntorrow night at the Town Hall there will he the monthly send-off to the recruits departing the next day for Trentliam. There are three men leaving this district, and the Overseas Club will organise a patriotic farewell on the customary lines. Three or four speeches will be made and a short concert programme rendered, particulars of which will appear to-morrow. The recruits with their relatives and friends are invited to attend aud will be entertained subsequently at slipper at the Overseas Club. All returned . soldiers tiro invited to be present tlnd join in the gathering to do honour to their newly-made comrades. We regret 'to chronicle that Airs Woolhouso, of Ross, has been, advised from the Minister of Defence that Private Alfred .Muir, of the New Zealand Forces, died of wounds on the 23td 'October.
