A BIG BATTLE. NEW YORK, Oct. 27. .11. Dtiraut.v writing from tho French front, states the gigantic battle continues with the utmost desperation. General Quillemat’s force continues to drive against the pounding positions which are protecting the German cen-li-e. The German defences include a quadruple system of trenches, five linos of barbed wire, each 20 feet deep, and anti-tank mines, liberally sown throughout the terrain. Despite these defences General Guillemot's troops broke through on a ten kilometre front between St. Quentin-le-Petit and Herpy. The Germans oppose the advance with a deluge of gas and high explosive shells.
The “Tageblatt” says the enemy has hundreds of tanks and we cannot yet combat them with equal weapons, hut we will soon he able to meet tanks with tank*. Mr Murdoch adds that Germany, however, recognises she is beaten, and the only question is the making of the best of terms. Even the “Cologne Gazette” accepts the Allies military superiority, and the hopelessness of the cause. The position in Austria is viewed seriously in Germany and grave developments are anticipated as a result of the events now in progress there.
