WELLINGTON, Oct. 25 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m.
Hon. Allison (Auckland), gave notice to move the •Address-in-'Reply on Wednesday. On the motion of Sir F. D. Bell, the Hon. Samuel (Taranaki) was appointed Acting-Chairman of Committees till the Speaker is elected on Friday .
Tho Council on the motion of Sir F. O. Bell, recorded its sense of the distinguished services rendered New Zealand by the late Hon. Sir Clias. Johnston, late Speaker of the Council and a former member of the House of Representatives. He extended sympathy to the family. Sir F. D. Bell referred to Sir Chas. Johnston’s distinguished personal family record. Tho members felt his death a personal loss. He was a good friend and comrade, and his loss would he keenly felt. Prior to hif election as Speaker, Sir Chas Johnston took little part- in the debates, but- lie was always in his place, and recorded his vote without partiality or prejudice. The Council also passed motions of sympathy to the relatives of the lat members of the House of Representatives who had died during the recess. The Council adjourned till Wednesday out. of respect to the deceased legislators. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.3(J. Rt. Hon. W. F. "Massey gave notice to set up a select committee to consider the export trade of the Dominion Replying to Mr Malcolm, Mr Massey said he. would be very pleased to submit- to Cabinet- a- proposal that- the House should he asked to pass a resolution affirming that- 'the Dominion would be satisfied with nothing less than the unconditional surrender of Germanv.
The following bills were introduced and read a first time:—Hospitals and Charitable Institution Amendment (Mr Malcolm)*";" Toll Gates Abolition, (Mr Wilkinson); Definition of Time (Mr gidoy; Workers Accommodation, (Mr Veitch); Legislative Amendment (Mr McCombs); Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment- (Mr Walker); Proportional Representative and’Effective Voting; Commercial Trusts Amendment; Police Force Amendment; Dominions State Bank (Mr Veitch); Registration of Business Names; Naturalised Subjects Franchise (Mr Vigor Brown). The last-named bill was contested bv tho Labour Party who considered it cast reflections on British horn sons of German parents, hut on a division the motion 'that, the hill be read a first time was agreed to by 40 to 15.
The customary motions of condolence with the families and relatives were moved by the Premier in connectin' with deaths of H. J. 11. Okev (Taranaki; R. Fletcher (Wellington Central) late member of the House and the following former members of the House; Hon. Sir Chas Johnston (Wellington), R. Meredith (Ashley), C. Gray (Christchurch), C. C. Rawlins (Tuapeka), T. Tanner (Waipawa). The motions which were supported by Sir Joseph Ward, and various speakers, were carried. On the motion of the Premier, the Hot iso rose at 5.10. till 2.30. on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the deceas'ed legislators.
