Ihe Military Service Board gave i; decision to-day in appeals by Arthur G, Butches, principal of the John M’Glashan College, and of tho chairman of ~ S the Presbyterian Assembly Committee on his behalf. The personal appeal, which was based on financial and family grounds was dismissed tho board holding that, tho hardship was no greater than was common to most Second Division meif. With regard to the employer’s appeal, tho board decided thatin the light of the Military S crr ice Act tho Art School was not essential,, and! ~* the appeal must fail.

A combined meeting of public servants: last evening carried the following resolution unanimously:—“On account of the largely increased cost of living this combined meeting of public servants of Canterbury demands from the National Government tho immediate and substantial increase of all salaries throughout the public services.”
LARGE FIRE AT RANGIORA
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day A disastrous fire occurred at Rangiora at an early hour this morning. The new portion of the New Zealand Farmers Co-operative Association Stores in the main street, a two-storeyed brick structure was completely destroyed. The damage is estimated at £40,000. The insurances totaE£33,ooo. The portion destroyed comprised the offices', grocery ironmongery, seeds, saddlery, tailoring dressmaking, arid bootmaking' department. The fire when discovered had a great hold and the brigade hncS no chance of effecting a save.
A HEROINE.
(ANOTHER INFLUENZA VICTIM..
AUCKLAND, This Dav Nurse Crossing, the fourth victim* of: the influenza on the Niagara, died at the hospital this morning. She was a passenger from Vancouver on her way to visit relatives at Sydney. She volunteered to nurse the influenza patients on the steamer, and remained tending the sick who remained on the vessel till Monday when she developed influenza with pneumonia complications. Sh c was removed to the hospital where she died .
