CORRESPONDENCE.

- BOLD HEAD ROAD. (To the Editor). Sir.,—lt was with surprise that I read the press'report of the Westland County Council meeting and your Editorial notes re Bold .Head road controversy. As one who is largely interested in the flax-milling and farming industries in South Westland, th e shortening and bettering of communication to our markets appeals as one of the essential matters. To find an organised attempt by a section of northern members of the Westland County Council, using tlieir position inimically against- the wishes of the 90 per cent of the rate payers of South Westland samples something of the American method of “Graft.” For the information of the gene-ai reader I may state that for the lasttwelve years there have bee a nine petitions and deputations formulat'd inrespect- to getting this road templet, ed, than any other work in the district, but 'ever, a sinister influence inimical to our wishes worked behind the scenes nullifying our efforts. Your town member of the> Council, Mr Duff, in remarks published, states that it seems that an organised attempt by a “few’’ is being made to block the bridge. Wliat kind of people does Air Duff think we are, some lower specie of the “Genus Homo” perhaps, not having the advantages in the country in having attained the brain development of the town dweller. I would impress on Mr Duff, that we have intelligence enough to know what we need, and that- we have no time nor inclination to bother ourselves in blocking bridges or anything else, bnt- in this instance outside any personal or political motives, the ratepayers will do their best to stop this bridge being built at the old ford. The said being built would stop the completion of the Bold Head road indefinitely. Thanking you sir, for the use of your valuable paper.—l am etc., W. H. CHINN. Wataroa October 19tb., 1918.
