A PROGRESSIVE FORM.
Messrs Blank and Berendt, the weilnown coach-builders of Hokitika, have Ist turned out to the, order of Messrs leale and Co., a fine sixteen passenger
thorough-brace coach to run on the Otirn-Artliur’s Pass road. The body is very roomy, with four cross seats, the two middle, seals being made removable for convenience in carrying goods if necessary. It is fitted with a canopytop, with folding curtains, which will be very conducive to the comfort- of passengers, either in wet or very hot weather. The panelling is all of kauri, with Australian hardwood frame very strongly put together, and is mounted on the orthodox three-reach gear which is all built of selected ironbark. A glance will at once convince the observer of its extreme strength and durability—a very necessary thing for the road it has got to run on. The axles are of the solid collar common-nut- pattern, two inches, which is a sufficientguarantee of strength. The upholstering is made of extra quality Crockett’s duck, very neatly done, as also are tne curtains. The painting, has boon tastefully done by Mr .T. L. Fowler —the body a dark coach green with yellow under-carriage and wheels. That the whole has been turned out. and in. a trial run yesterday gave the utmost satisfaction to the proprietor, is a fair indication of what this firm can do, as it is a job that would tax the resources of a good many of the largest shops in the Dominion. The coach presented a fine spectacle this morning as it drove away with a fine team of five upstanding horses, and the little knot of interested spectators who assembled to see the start will wish the new proprietors all success in their enterprise. We may mention that special attention has been given to the brake, which has been very ippwel-fuflly made with two levers — one each side—so that the ample brake power is assured. Also that the gear is fitted with a safety hook so that if the king-holt should break it is impossible for the fore carriage to got away.
