Egypt, on October 17, malaria slight. The ladies of the Literary Club are hard at- work preparing for their Be zaar which takes place on the 13th November. In addition to all sorts of bargains in the way of needle work, produce and sweets there will he a fvfii pond for the children full of novelties and side shows to suit all tastes.
Mr'. (Jumpers, as president of the American Federation of Labour, is the most influential trade union leader in the world, he has thrown the 1 whole weight of his immense power into winning tlie war. He has sternly proclaim ed himself opposed to any strike by American labour so long as the Germans continue to occupy any portion of France and Belgium, and he has been oqualy emphatic in his hostility to any negotiation by Labour with representatives of Germany. , Mr Tom Bollard has forwarded to the Hokitika Copper Trail Fund a cheque for £33/15/- being the proceeds promised in connection with the late performance of the comic opera, “Paul Jones” by the local amateurs. The ■ contribution will be a very acceptable one, and the community is again indebted to Mr Bollard for his evcr-rcady financial support to local patriotic work, apart from tlie special pleasure given by tlic excellent operatic performances supplied under his personal direction and management.
