TRAMWAY MEN’S REQUEST.
CHRISTCHURCH, October 16
The Christchurch Tramway employees have unanimously resolved to request from the Tramway Board increases in pay equal to those recently conceded by the Wellington City Council.
Tlie men’s decision has communicatid to the Board, with a request for a reply in time fordcnsJ,deration at a further meeting of the Union to bo held at midnight on Saturday. The Board, however, are unlikely to deal with the matter before its regular meeting on Monday. The men make no mention to the Board of what their alternative is ,or of what will happen if there is no reply to place before Saturday’s meeting ; nor would the Union Secretary make any statement beyond this: “We are not threatening the Board, but are j simply making a requost for what we consider our dues.”
ANGLICAN SYNOD. CHRISTCHURCH, October 16. At the Anglican Synod, Rev. J. R. Howland to-day moved:—“That the Synod adopt the platform of the Labour Party, on the liquor question on
the four points: (1) Rational continuance, (2) Immediate national prohibition with compensation, (3) Prohibition with out compensation, and (4) National Ownership, those issues to he decided by preferential voting, with a single transferable vote.” He also moved'.—“That the National Efficiency Board’s recommendation be adopted by the Synod.” Both motions were taken together. In the discussion which followed opinion leaned towards the Efficiency
Hoard’s recommendaton, hut the delate was not concluded when the Syiod adjourned . Bishop Julius said ho wanted prolibition, with or without compensation, if the country was ready to give comjensation, he would prefer it.
AUCKLAND, This Day
By agreement with the Union Coy. the Wntersiders working the steamor in port .will, in the event of contracting inflnema within seven days, have all expenses so incurred defrayed by the Company and will also receive two days extra pay, in order that they remain away from the watersiders’ wharf shed for that period, to obviate the risk of infection.
OBITUARY. AUCKLAND, This Day Obituary.—Rev. George Burgess, Congregational Minister is dead. ATTEMPTED MURDER, DUNEDIN, This Day. The Superintendent, of Police has received advice from the police at Roxburgh, stating that George Rackley, aged 60 attempted to murder his wife at Millers’ Flat yesterday, and afterwards committ-e suicide.
