j LOST WITH HIS U-BOAT. , The Hun who sank the Lusitania has been killed at sen. His - name was | Lieut.-Commander Schwieger, and when J killed he was in command of the Gor- : man submarine U 88. The circuin- ' stances of his deatli illustrate the effectiveness of the modern British methods of combating submarines . U 88 was on a emise with another German submarine. She bad got well out-in the Right of Heligoland when both boats submerged. The boat accompanying IJ 88 soon after sho had submerged folt a chain sweeping along her side with such force that her cap; tain at once guessed sho was in an unknown British 'mine-field, (chains are used to moor mines). At that moment he heard a terrific explosion under water, which shook his boat violently from stem to stern, and he decided, to go to the surface. On the surface there was no sign of T7.SB. He waited and watched, trying wireless and submarine bell signals, without obtaining nnv answer. Finally . he came to the conclusion that- ÜBB had struck a mine, causing the explosion he had heard, and had gone to the bottom. ' This occurred in September 1917, and ■_ nothing more has been hoard of her, so ’ that Schwieger’s death is now admitted ’ by the German Admiralty.
