The Americans have been fighting a heavy battle on the Ilindonburg line south Gouy, Australian units are cooperating. Around the St Quentin tunnels, the German defence is strenuous. The Germans are holding positions by means of an army of manned and electrically lighted barges in the tunnels and and galleries radiating from the canal where here runs under a hill. The barges have required a vigorous mopp-ing-up. The Germans allowed Americans to pass north of the tunnel and then attacked them in the rear. Australians intervened and the tunnel mouth is chocked with German dead. Wintry winds have madt> progress difficult.
FURTHER AUSTRALIAN SUCCESS. LONDON, October 2. General Monash has wired Mr Hughes j that the Australians have captured all their objectives to-day east of the Hmdonburg line. ALLIED CAPTURES. According to the latest calculation, the Entente’s captured since the 18tli July a total of 295,000 prisoners, 3,900 guns, from twenty to thirty thousand machine guns,' nearly a thousand French, Serbian, and Belgian towns, and many millions’ worth of material. ADVANCE IN AEGONNE. LONDON, Oct. 2. An American communique states: We have advanced our lines in the Argonne forest. Further eastward our patrols have passed beyond Ccerges, and are operating north thereof, and are also in contact with the enemy on the road her ween Ezcennpnt and Gennes. In the north we are advancing with the Franeo-British and participating in their successes. An American report states: Since September 26th our aviators shot down over a hundred enemy planes and 21 balloons.
AMERICAN HOSPITAL HIT. WASHINGTON, Oct. 2. A shell struck an American hospital behind the lighting line, killing twenty wounded men.
GERMANS LEAVING BELGIUM WASHINGTON October 2
Despatches from Holland state that the Germans are removing stores and guns from the Belgian coast. German civil sins have been recalled from Belgium, while naval reserves stationed at Antwerp are said to be preparing to leave.
