FALL OF ST. QUENTIN. LONDON, October 1. Word lvas been received that tho French forces have entered St. Quentin. A French official report states: “Pursuing the enemy we have penetrated into St. Quentin. The First French Army, who are co-operating with the British in the legion of St Quentin has achieved important results to-day. Pursuing the retreating enemy we have penetrated into St. Quentin as far as the canal. The Germans are still stubbornly resisting at the extremities of the town, i.vjiich we have •outflaked. On the north side we have reached the canal between Tronquoy and Rouvroy while .southwards, we" have progressed towards the llindenburg line to a point two kilometres east of Gauchy.
MAKING a BREAK. LONDON, October 1. Mr Gilmour writing on Monday says: The Americans and Australians have made a great bulge through the Hindenburg line. They now occupy a salient.- with the British. The salient is probably three miles in depth beyond the Hindcnburg system, which never before had been penetrated on this sector. , , Bellieourt, which has been captured was surrounded by a maze of wire entanglements. Nauroy ,tw o miles beyond, proved that the German defensive line had been constructed with all the skill, ingenuity, and labour at the command of the Germans under peaceful conditions. It is no longer impregnable. This blow proves beyond doubt that good troops can easily penetrate the Hindcnburg line.
SIN great battles on. LONDON, Oct, 1
Reports this morning show that si? great, battles are now raging on the West Front. The total frontage of the battles is 110 miles.
CAMBRAI FALLING. LONDON, Oct. 2. A United l’ress message from London states it is believed the Allies took Cambrni. 'flip British have encircled Armentieres. fight for cambrai. (Received This Da,v. at 2.25 a.m.l LONDON, Oet. 2. Mr Percival Phillips writes that Headquarters of the German 17th Army issued an order that Cambrai must not fall. Meanwhile the enemy have massed fresh divisions around the belengured town. General von Buiow is determined to fight to a finish. Canadians at five this morning drove again with full weight behind a moving screen of red-hot metal towards _ the Scheldt Canal, northwards of the town. Fight Germans divisions, including newly trained reserves, are wedged in a depth along a 51 nhle s front, between Cambrai and Aubencheul, by the Sensee river. Canadians suffered severe losses, hut this only stiffened them.
