BRITISH OPERATIONS. WELLINGTON, This Day The High Commission reports from London on Sep. 30t at 10.20 p.m.:— Sir Douglas Haig reports in spit-e of unfavourable weather, we have made important progress' to-day. To our left the- English and Australians havejittacked northward of the spurs on the Nauroy—Gouy line, overcoming strong enemy resistance. Many prisoners have been taken. The New Zealanders cleared the west bank of the Canal as far. as Creveeoeur. AIRMEN’S AID. LONDON, Sep. 30. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Aeroplanes co-operated in every phase of Saturday’s operations. Patrols reconnoitering the rear of the German lines, reported the trend of the enemy movements. They operated from an extremely low height on enemy troops, transport, .trains, and gun teams, •u-.er heavy casualties were inflicted. Twenty-two machines were destroyed and three driven down. Twenty-four British machines are missing. FIGHTING IN CAMBRAI.
LONDON, Sep. 30
Sir Douglas Haig reports: Heavy fighting ha 9 taken place on the left of our battlefront. The enemy compelled our advanced troops to withdraw from Aubenehiel-nn-Bac and Arleux. The enemy has been unable to prevent- our progress westward and northwestward of Cambrai. Our advance <- taehments have reached the junctions of th a Arras —Cambrai, and the Bapa ume—'Cambrai roads, and have entered the northern suburbs of Cambrai.
We have repulsed determined counterattacks in this sector, inflicting heavy losses. There has been heavy rain at night- time and it is still stormy. Latest reports show that fighting is now proceeding within Cambrai. The western and south-western suburbs have been captured by the Allies.
BRITISH PROGRESS. LONDON, Sep. 30. Reporting this evening, Sir Douglas Haig states: Northward of St. Quentin on Sunday the 46t-li North Midland Division captured four thousand prisoners and forty guns. The enemy resistance has been obstinate. Between Bellieourt and Gonuelieu the Americans, Australians, and English have had heavy fighting until night. . Despite strong opposition we ■rained ground and took many prisoners. ” Counter-attacks have pressed us back slightly to the western outskirts of Bony and Villers-Guislain.
