Diptherin is still uncomfortably prevalent in Wellington, there being _48 cases of diptheria reported during the month ended Sept. 47, as against 49 the previous month. Mr. James Rennie, headmaster of the Albany street school. Dunedin, has been nominated for the vacancy on the General Council of Education, caused *by the death of Mr. T. S. Foster, of Christchurch.
The police have arrested a woman in Nelson in connection with the abandonment of an infant on the 11th iiistat Wellington. It will he remembered that tli(> child was found in a go-cart in the grounds of the Catholic Convent nt. Kilbirnie.
Two pupils passed the flying tost at the Christchurch aviation grounds on Friday morning, namely, G. Cromio (Raka’iaL and F. W. MoTlroy, (Greymouth''. Others would have gone through tlie test if the wind had been more lovourable. Colonel Chaffey and Captain Robertson were the observers. An elderly man named Pope, who has been engaged as steward on the coal steamer Ngaliere for the past fortnight, dropped dead in Wellington on Friday. Tlie deceased was formerly employed for some time on the steamer Ngatoro as steward.
A question put to Mr. C. AY. Tanner at liis election meeting at 'Wellington was whether, as females were becoming numerically stronger than males, lie would he in favour of polygamy. “I have only had. one wife,’ said Mr. Tanner, in reply, “and I never want another.” (Loud laughter,)

The annual meeting of the Hokitika Shipping Company Limited was held on Saturday. The directors report and balance sheet which showed a balance to loss of £1192 7s 3d . was received. Messrs Perry, Condon, Mclntosh, Reiiton, Wood, Evans, and Patrick were appointed directors and Mr. H. Wilson ’Auditor.
The questions put to Mr. C. W. Tanner at his election meeting at Wellington were many and varied. One questioner wished to know if tho candidate would introduce into Parliament, if elected, a measure for the suppression of wowser ism. Wowser ism said the questioner, was becoming a very* active element in the country, and if not subdued it would be impossible shortly for any clean-living man to stay in tho Dominion. “If you elect me,” shouted back Mr Tanner ,in reply, “it will ho the greatest knock wowserism lias ever had.” (Great enthusiasm.)
