The influenza epidemic is' serious in Wellington. Many business staffs are depleted. Public entertainers are also i suffering. In one case last night an j entertainment had to be abandoned. Both Trentham and Fentherston Camp Hospitals have many influenza -ases, but they arc generally of a mild character. FIRE BRIGADE RESIGNS. ROTORUA, Sep. 25. Tho members of the Rotorua Fire Brigade, except three, wero absent from their last meeting, and have decided to resign, alleging that the Fire Board put into commission an unrej liable motor hose and reel, and put | the blame for its defects upon the j Superintendent, who was not ••espons- | :ible for the purpose. The Superini fondant resigned after last meeting. STTFF FINES AT NELSON. NELSON, Sep. 25. Mr E. C. Levvy, S-M., heard a ease to-day in which IV. S. Horroeks, licensee of the Tasman Hotel, was charged with supplying liquor before the lawful hours of opening, with exposing liquor before hours, and with permit- | ting treating. The care rested on tho evidence of a. constable, supported by certain admissions made by another defendant, who was charged with treating, hut denied bv him in the box. Horroeks was convicted on all eliarg*e.s. He was fined £4O for treating, £lO for supplying, £1 each for exposing and selling, and on the last chargo the license was endorsed. Bass, the barman, was convicted of permitting treating. Tie was fined £lO. One man found on the premises > was fined £7 10s, and another £5. cases. Security was fixed for appeal in all cases.
THE SHIPPING SHORTAGE. WELLINGTON, Sep. 25,
Hon. Mr Guthrie has, communicated with the High Commissioner, asking him to inform tho New Zealand Government what foundation there was for TTon. Mr Hoover, the American Foou Minister's statement regarling the transfer of shipping to tho Atlantic. As soon as definite information comes to hand. Mr Guthrie will make n. public, with a view to giving the fullest information to producers.
LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED. NELSON, This Day. Nelson carried the loan proposal to purchase the wharves from tho railway department, by 85 votes over the required three-fifths majority. The price is £103.000. LOANS FOR SOLDIER SETTLERS. WELLINGTON. S pt. 25. Wellington War Relief Association tc-day carried the following resolution: —“That, owing to the increasing number of applications for loans from totumod soldiers, desirous of settling on the land, and the obvious difficulty cf aiding applications desirous of financial assistance to establish themselves in this and other walks of life the Executive endorses the Applications Committee’s recommendation that no more loans of a like nature be granted, at least until such time; as a general scheme he evolved enabling something like uniform treatment to lie accorded ill classes of applicants; and that a deputation present and explain this decision to the Acting Prime Minister.”-
