The report of ihe stock sales this week indicates that prime Westland beef continues to hold its own in the competitive market. There wore ninety-one head yarded, and of this number no less than seventy-four head came off tinpastures of,South Westland. It. sneaks well for thq__qunlity of tlio feed in the southern district to note that four head from the sweet fields of Cooks river flat, topped the market at the substantial figure of £2B per head, showing the substantial price commanded by oca) stock. It is interesting to note that of the yarding, fifty nine head of the stock were destined for the north, that i s outside of Westland County. The sale prices reveal what South Westland pastures can do, and bear out the trft repeated statements ns to the quality of the pastoral land s in Westland. WTiat is being done in the way of stock raising must ho a surprise to thos c who are not acquainted with the south itself. Certainly it is a long range of country, but the lands brought into actual profit- by tilling arc quite insignificant in relation to the total area. WTicn the settlors resort to tilling anu the growing of staple and winter feed the product of the southern district must be considerably enhanced. The settlors will not have any difficulty in quitting their stock even for a local market, and when facilities for railing direct to Canterbury are provided, stock-raising may be expected to go ahead by leaps and bounds.
