Sout, Chief Justice, in an address at’ Carterton, on Friday evening, said if there was to be any hope for democracy and the future of humanity the war must go on and on until Germany was utterly defented. He emphatically ridiculed Bolshevik idea of “no indemnity, no annexations, no reparation,” which parrot cry was being echoed by some of our own people, the so-called pacifists. If this were to he the adopted principle, then murder, theft, and rapine were to be condoned, and instead of punishing wrong-doing, we should shake bands and live amicably with the wrong doors. Those twlio held those views should go to Russia, where the ideas were being so dreadfully put into pi notice. There was uo doubt whatever that part of the German plan was to conquer England as well as Franco and Russia, and seize the British colonies. Reports had actually been made of the mineral and other possibilities of Now Zealand.

According to Lieuf-Colonel J. L. Slecman, LG.S., there are some popular illusions regarding flying. In his address on aviation at the Canterbury Officers Club he said lie had come to the conclusion that the average man’s impressions of the sensations felt on first, flight, were erroneous. No sensations were really felt on a calm day. The sensation at tlie start was really one of annoyance at the noise of the machine. There .was a general impression that a flight- caused giddiness, but such was not felt at a height from the ground. Swinging was felt very slightly, anrl bumping was uncomfortable only on occasions. The sensation of flying was not at all uncomfortable . It was no use looking from the ground to see in which direction the wind was blowing. The first duty on tho Western from before dawn was to send an aeroplane up 15,000 feet to record the winds and their velocity and direction. Soldiers’ Cakes, machine made, a speciality at Preston’s. Miss Elsie Chinn of Wataroa having been nominated as the South Westland candidate for the Queen Carnival in aid of the “Coppertrail” Funds, an extension of time has been granted. The campaign will probably end at about the middle of November. Meanwhile the two candidates, namely, North Westland. (Mrs. Capt. Richards, red and black), and South Westland, (Miss Cinn, green and white), are busily bringing forward all possible proofs of their just claims to occupy the “Coppertrail” Throne. Each has very strong claims for support and very strong forces behind her, and much depends on the energy and valourof the respect ivo legions. Experts consider that whichever one “gets there” will indeed have proved her fitness to rule. The break in t.ke Lake Kanieri road - just beyond McKay’s Creek bridge, is a considerable breach. On Saturday night the Kanieri river was in very high flood and the river played with direct force on the roadway. Late at night the river appears to hav© been at its highest and at the point of impact played havoc with the stone protection with which tho road was faced. Through tho night the river for a chain or more had. taken the place of the roadway. Yesterday men were at work under the direction of the conn ty authorities, making a temporary deviation for wheel traffic, and the new road will be passable for this class of traffic probably to-morrow. The river still ha s a strong set- into the roadway, nnl effective protective works at the danger point will be costly.
