LATE SPORTIING

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] RACING COMMENT. SYDNEY, This Day. Interviewed prior to the Spring Stakes, Mr Greenwood was so sanguine, of Biplane winning that ho remarked that if he doesn’t it will not be much use taking liim to Victoria or running any more in Australia. Mr Greenwood is confident Gloaming will prove an exception to tho Welkin breed, and will win the Derby.

Critics are inclined to think that Biplane was not beaten on his merits. He was left a long way behind the field when the barrier lifted, though he made his way up on the outside of the field along the back, lie never bad a hope of catching the pacemakers, and finished near the last horses, probably due to tho fact that he was eased up when it was seen to be useless to chase the place-getters. Finmnrk’s defeat is considered to he due to lack of condition. He was forced to the front to make his own running and weakened in the last furlong.

PRESS COMMENT. (Received This Day at 1.5. p.m.)

SYDNEY. This Day. The “Herald says Biplane shaped most disappointingly. The “Tele, graph “ says tlm racing produced several surprises. The defeat of Finmark was bad enough, but ■corse was to follow in the defeat of Biplane. He was badly left, through '■•winging out sidewavs when the barrier lifted, and was the last to get away. He ran wide in making the turn, but made up sufficient ground at the entrance of the straight to give him a -'bailee. Once in the straight, however, bo could make no impression on tho loaders and continued to drop back.
