PATRIOTIC COMPERTIONS.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY WEEK.

The joint committee controlling the Patriotic Competitions met at the Overseas on Saturday night, when entries closed for the interesting event to transpire on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The Hon. Secretaries reported that there were in all some 124 entries, made up as follows; elocution 52; vocal music 13, dancing 59. The entries were considered very satisfactory, embracing as they do a number of country contestants, as well as saline GVeymouth competitors. The local entries are substantial. Altogether there should be very good competition. The Hon. Secretaries were asked to arrange the programme to-extend over two days and nights. There will he forenoon and afternoon sessions, principally devoted to r-he recalls and finals. It was agreed that competitors may have their own accompanists, and where these wore not available, it was resolved to ask Miss Dalv ((piano) Mr. Barrowman (pipes), and Mr. Gibbons (flute) to act as the official accompanists.

It was resolved to ask the Mayor to preside oil the opening night of the competitions, and the Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L.C. on the second night. Arrangements were made in respect to the judging which will be decided by .Messrs J. F. Wilson, (elocution); G'. Staffing (music); and H. MacDonald (dancing). Mr. MacDonald, is expected to arrive from Fairlie next Monday, and the judges from Grey mouth will reach here on the morning of the competitions, which will begin at 10 o’clock each dav.

Various arrangements were made about the hall ,including door keepers, stage managers and supervisors. The admission to the day sessions will be sixpence to all parts of the theatre. At the evening sessions the admission will be 2s and Is (plus war tax). Seats may be reserved for each day at 2s fid for. (.lie day and nightsessions. The box plan is at Mrs Browne’s.
