I The enemy claim that they foresaw the evacuation and prepared for it, but- the number of prisoners failed to bear this out. Few stores however, | were left and this shows the Germans were preparing to leave the ground. The town of St. Mihiel is praeticpljjy- undamaged. The railway from ; Verdun to Commernev, Toul and Nancy ! is intact, and will lie used at once. The Thiancourt-St. Mihiel' railway is also intact. The whole operation must he regarded as a big local success. LONDON, September 14. An American report states: In the St Mihiel sector we have achieved further successes. There has been a junction of our troops advancing from the south of tho sector with those advancing from the west. . This ha 9 given us possession of the whole of the salient to points twelve miles north-east-of St. Mihiel and has resulted in the capture of many prisoners. Forced back by our steady advance the enemy is retiring and destroying large quantities of materials as he goes. The number of prisoners has risen to 13,300.
