CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD
A special meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held on "Wednesday for the purpose of electing standin"- committees. There were present: Messrs C. H. Opie (chairman), C. S. Howard,' E. 11. Andrewes, 11. J. Bignell, J. Maze, C. W. Armitage, J. Jamieson, A. Peverill, T. Hughes, \V. A. Banks, W. P. Spencer, and the Hon. J. Grimmond M.L.C. A welcome was extended to Air. I. Hughes, the new representative on the Southern Ward. Air Opie, in retiring from the. position of chairman of the Board, expressed in feeling terms his appreciation ol the manner in which members had always assisted him, also tlio staff, to whom he proposed a vote of thanks and confidence. The motion was seconded by , Air. Jamieson, anil carried. _ Air. Opie then vacanted the chair, which was temporarily taken by the secretary, Mr. 11. B. Lane. Air. Jamieson nominated Air. Bigneli as the new Chairman, but Afr. Bigneli who conies from the West Coast, declined, expressing his opinion that, the Chairman should resido nearer Christchurch. . Air. Jamieson thereupon proposed Air Banks, who was elected to the posiIn returning thanks, Afr. Banks referred to the very great value of nn educated democracy, and said that the poor man’s son should have an equal chance with anybody else. That could only be brought about by education. Incidentally, he expressed the opinion that were the education of the masses a world-wide fact, there would he no such terrible conditions ns those now obtaining in Russia. On the motion of Mr. Armitage, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Opie for his past, services as chairman. . - ! Standing committees were elected as follows, the chairman of the Board beino- ex officio a member of each.
