Goneral Haig reports there was sev- f ere fighting on Monday afternoon be- \ tween Mnricourt and Bapaume, also north of that town. The enemy couu- | ter attacked repeatedly in; strength in- j eurring great losses from our fire, but he was unable to arrest the progress of the English and Welsh, who pushed through Mont Aubin, and along the crest of the ridge capturing high ground and reaching Longueval. Here, a heavy counter attack at G. 30. in the evening forced up back towards Bazentin l e Grand and Highwood. On this line we broke up • the enemy’s attack and again advancing established ourselves well eastward of Highwood. Early in the night the enemy counter attacked for a second time and was driven off .by rifle Are before reaching our positions. Northward of Highwood the enemy twice counter attacked in the neighbourhood of "Ligny and Thilloy, pressing back our advanced troops four hundred .or five hundred yards. His infantry, were then stopped and were driven back. The New Zealanders, after fierce fighting, established themselves on the §0 northern outskirts of Bapaume. Tho English furthor north, made progress towards Beugnatre, and had hard fighting about Croiselles. On the right of the battle front the Australians continued to advance astride of the Somme, and substantially progressed towards Dompierre and eastward of Suzanne. On the left of the battle front, the Canadians, in the afternoon captured the ridge eastward of Vancourt- and established themselves eastward of Ouenappe. ■ Northward of the Scnrpe, the Scottish renowing the attack at night substantially progressed towards Plovain. Prisoners since the morning of the 21st August exceeded 21000.
