PROGRESS CONTINUES. OPERATIONS SUCCESSFUL. [Australian <fc s.£. cable association ifc REUTER. J (Received This Day at 10.15. a. Ji.i LONDON, Aug. 26. General Haig reports that hostile opposition increased to-day with the arrival of German reinforcements. Many German counter-attacks were broken with loss, under fire. Our troops despite counter-attacks, fought their way forward with great gallantry, and overcoming resistance further progressed taking many prisoners. On the northern bank of the fcoinme tho Australians by a successful attack early in the morning, carried the enemies position oil the high- ground eastward of Bray, while on their left the London and East County divisions continued to advance in tho direction ot Carney, and have taken Mamotz. Tho Welsh captured Mametz Wood. In the eerure of our attack, we crossed the Arbert-Bapaume road along is whole liength, southward of Bapaume and captured Martinpuich, Les Sars, and Lebarque. Northward of Bapaume severe tighting occurred at Favrouiland about Mary Croisilles. We progressed eastward of Bebagness and in Neuville Vitase. r ,. A counter-attack against our Givenchy sector was repulsed.

FURTHER PROGRESS. (Received Tins l)'iv nr 11.25. a.in.) LONDON, Aug. 20. General Haig report our troops at three o’clock this morning attacked in the Scarp© sector. Good progress is reported on the southern hattlefront. We slightly advanced our line astride the Sommo and by a successful operation carried out on Sunday, progressed iu the direction of Maracourt. Tho enemy on. Sunday evening launclied a strong counter-attack southward and northward of Bapaume j.. also in the neighbourhood of EaueourtI’Abbnge and Faveruil. The attacks were repulsed. Northward of Favreuil wo met the enemy with the bayonet inflicting heavy casualties and taking - prisoners. Another counter attack later in the in the neighbourhood of Favreuil was_also unsuccessful. Favreuil is in our hands, and wo have made progress beyond the village. We ' improved our positions southwestward of Mory and westward of Croiselles. - Heavy rain is now falling along tho battle front.

Tho High Commission reports from London 2Gtli August at 12.30. p.m.— Sir Douglas Haig reports at 3 this morning we attacked on. the S car po sector and made good progress towards Eavcourt . l’Abbaye and Favreuil. Strong enemy counter attacks were repulsed with heavy losses. Favreuil is now captured and we have progressed beyond.
