HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD

A meeting of the above Board was held ou Saturday evening at 7 o'clock. ]’resent—-Messrs It. Wild (Chairman), S. P. Evans and C. J. Nightingale. An apology was received for the absence ot G. H. Chapman. The minutes of the previous special -and ordinary meetings and outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Canterbury Education Board, asking for a douaioii to the funds of the Grcymouth School of Engineering.— Received; and resolved that funds did not permit of the granting of the request. From Kaneiri Power Ltd., re use of Board’s winch. —Received and attended to. From .Jeffries and Co complaining of

tiic wrong delivery of a parcel from Okarito.—Received and referred to the Hokitika Company. From I). .1. Evans thanking Hoard for expression of sympathy in his recent bereavement. —Received. From Stuart and Chapman Ltd., forwarding cheque for use of pile driving plant.—Received. " From Motuelui Harbour Board inquiring whether the Board made any charge for .obtaining gravel from foreshore.—Received and replied to in the negative. From Valuation, Advance to Soldiers Department, and Soldiers Financial Assistance Board, a quantity .of correspondence regarding entries on the rolls, or claims of payment of rates, —.Received and referred to the rate collector.

REPORT’S. From Harbourmaster, reporting that the last flood bad scoured out the bar with a deep straight channel, there being a depth of IT feet at spring tides, and 12 feet at neap tides; also that the flood had carried away the hanging portion of the wall, which had been attacked by the torodo. The wall at the end is now square, and so far is clear of the torodo. Further that a considerable amount of backing at the west end of the wharf bad been fixed up to prevent the. river washing into the road.—Received. The Rate Collector placed a comprehensive statement of receipts and expenditure for the current year before the Board. The Chairman in discussing the statement said if was evident there was a shrinkage in revenue, and now that the Defender had been lost, it would be advisable to economise by dispensing with the services of the shore pilot. °He therefore moved that the services of Mr IT. Hart be dispensed with i from the end of the month. Tin's was carried.

The Chairman was authorised to make financial arrangements that he may deem necessary. The Chairman moved the statutory notices for th e striking of the new rate due on September 30.—Agreed to. Accounts to the amount of £458 7s 4d were passed for payment, hut of this amount £379 5s 3d had already been paid, being wages-sheet and instalment for interest on loan. The Board adjourned at 8.15 o’clock.
