j RED CROSS COLLECTION. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Council of Churches of Christchurch has decided to hold a collection on the first Sunday in October, for the benefit of the Red Cross Our Day effort.
NATIVE RUNS AMUCK. WANGANUI, August 15. An elderly native, Poro Konu To Patu, ran amuck early this morning. Ho visited the residence of a settler, Mr F. M’Williams, three miles from the town at 5 o’clock. There lie smashed all the windows in the house, and did other damage amounting to £59. after which he went to a neighbours and attacked the owner. The latter’s son, who was near by defended his father with a spade knocking down the native whose hands were tied to prevent further trouble. The Native was taken to the hospital, but is not badly hurt.
SOLDIER. SETTLE.)fENTS. WELLINGTON, August 1(1. The Minister of Lands (the Hon D. H. Guthrie) has prepared a return of properties purchased for soldier settlements, showing a total cost of £289,493. Air Guthrie considers the result is good, and has exceeded expectations, but many soldiers desired to form settlements on their own and not merge in the general community. He regretted their unwillingness to undergo preliminary training A farm of 1200 acres was set aside in Canterbury, and tbc Patriotic Association undertook the expense of management', but the mcn would not go there and learn under a good manager.
