STAFF CAPTAIN CHARGED. DUNEDIN July 29,

Arthur Charles Cornwallis Stevens, captain, Now Zealand Staff Corps, group commander at Milton, and adjutant of the South Otago Regiment was proceeded against at Milton today, "before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., on seven charges of theft all laid by the Audit Department. Three ot the charges were in respect of the theft of cheques lor £2O on October 26tli, 11)1(3, £5 on November 7th., 1916, and £2O on November 16th., 1916. The other charges were the theft of £27/13/, and three other small sums, the allegation of the Audit Department being that the accused received those moneys and failed to account, for them .

The prosecution admitted that all the money had been paid in prior to the proceedings being taken. The accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed

CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES AUCKLAND, July 29.

John C. Harrison, who was arrested at Vancouver on a charge of false pretences in connexion with the sale of a preparation known., ns Ancona Sheep Dip, alleged to be valueless, was brought up in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day and remanded on bail of two sureties of £350 each. RACING PERMITS. REDUCED BY ONE-THIRD. DUNEDIN June 28. The Hon. G. AY. Russell states that racing permits for the coming season are now finally approved. The permits show a reduction of one third ns compared with those issued the year before last.
