A NARROW ESCAPE

BY STEAMER NGAIIERE. GISBORNE, This Day.

The Blackball steamer Ngahere when leaving port this morning as caught by the sea and thrown across the Channel at the Entrance. A heavy sea coming in, the vessel appeared for a time to be in a serious predicament, but she teas ultimately drawn back under the shelter of the wall. It is understood she has sustained no damage.

CONCERNING MARRIED MEN. CHRISTCHURCH, July 21. An important pronouncement in regard to certain class of military appellants, was made by Mr TI. W. Bishop, Chairman of the Military Service Board, to-day. He stated that he had received a telegram from tin authorities asking that where appellants applied for leave on account of approaching confinement- of their wives tho Board should grant leave to tin first convenient concentration after the event, in all cases where the confinement was due in two months. This prac tiee, Mr Bishop stated had been followed by tho Board. In all cases where the event was further off, leave from camp could be obtained on application

KILLED BY MOTOR OAR. HAWERA This Day. A sad fatality occurred last evening on the main South Road about threequarters of a mile from town. Thomas Morgan, aged 73, an old and respected resident was returning about six o’clock from milking his cows, and war wheeling the milk in a handcart, accompanied by his young nephew, who was walking ahead, The lad heard a crash, and looking round, saw a motor zigzagging across tho road. The car had run over Morgan who liao received terrible injuries. Both legs were broken and there was a gash 'on his head. . He died a few minutes afterwards. Deceased leaves a widow and grown-up family. He was a wellknown veteran and was present at the recent Turuturu and Mokai celebrations .
