The second ballot of Class C (men with two children) was to he made public to-day. Our copy of the gazette however, is delayed owing to the mail not getting through from Christchurch vosterday.

The “ Inangahu.i Herald” reports the death on Tuesday of Mr Wa Richardson, a well-known tailor, and one of the founders of the Reefton Jockey Club. Deceased was a native of Norfolk, England, and K2 years of age. Private word received this afternoon states that there is not the slightest hope of yailway traffic to Arthur’s 11ass on Thursday getting through, and it is extremely doubtful if traffic will get through on Saturday. In fact, jt. is almost a certainty that there will he no overland traffic this week. Passengers who loft for "Christchurch on Tuesday morning from the West Coast had a very trying journey. When they reached Otira. they were, told they could get through, and so the coach journey was made with the snow deep oil the ground. The walk up the ‘Gorge was a tiring one, with the snow clogging the boots, and when the- travellers mounted the coach they were damp and eolil. On arrival at Arthur’s Pass they learned, with disgust, that there would be no train till Thursday, and perforce had to return again by the coach to Otira, which was reached about 11 p.ni., and the train (which bad been held for them) brought them back again to Groymouth, cold and dispirited, after a very unpleasant day’s journey;.
