Several submarines, are attacking Trans-Atlantic craft. A large ship was torpedoed. The Navy Department announces tliat the cruiser San Diego was submarined off the'Coast, but a Intel message says that the cause is unknown though it is believed there i> no loss of life. BRITISH SLOOP SI NK. LONDON, July 19. An Admiralty report states that a British sloop was torpedoed and sunk on the sixteenth. No officers were saved, and only twelve of a crew. COOLNESS OF AUSTRALIANS. LONDON, July 20. The discipline aboard the Barunga was perfect. Destroyeis carried out some thrilling rescues. The Australians displayed the utmost coolness and sang patriotic songs, and arranged impromptu races in lifeboats. CARPATHJ A TORPEDOER. ALL SAVED BUT FIVE.. • LONDON July 20, The Carpathia, outward, bound was thrice torpedoed on Wednesday, off the Irish coast, and sank quickly. ’Flic onlv casualties were five firemen who it is believed were killed by an explosion. There were over 200 aboard 57 being passengers. The first torpedo struck her just ns breakfast was finished. ' Tiie second two minutes later, and exploded near the engine-room. The third struck the gunners.’c-room ami a big explosion followed., The submarine was visible and Was a big two-masted type. The torpedo damaged the wireless and it was 'impossible' to call for help, There was no panic, nnd all were in the boats within 1.5 minutes. A warship rescued .the survivors at midday. A sailer; says that the submarine trained her guns on tho boats, and ■ would have fired, but for the timely arrival of a minesweeper. T 1 ic third engineer and boiler master.- though badly scalded, gallantly stood- by the engines long enough to bring the vessel to a standstill, enabling the boats to be launched without any delay. CREW OF SAN DIEGO SAFE. WASHINGTON July 20. An official communique states that tho crew of the San Diego are safe. AUSTR ALIAN MAILS' LOST. LONDON, July 20. The Press Bureau notifies that mails posted between the oth of June and the 2nd of July, for Australia and Sonthsoa Islands, have been lost at sea through enemy action.
