OBITUARY.

MBS. D, .3. EVANS. .ETAT 52 YEARS. It it. with extreme regret that wo record the death of Mrs Evans, wife of Mr. D. J. Evans, County Clerk, which took place after three o’clock this morning after a brief illness. Deceased was about on Tuesday morning last assisting in the preparations for packing soldiers’ parcels, but complained of a chill, and later in the day had to tako to her bed. Medical attention was secured, and Dr. Teichelmanu and nurses did all that was possible to relieve the sufferer. The attack of bronchitis was attended with other complications and at one time on Thursday it was feared she would not live loug enough to enable her husband, who was away in Wellington to reach her bedside. The condition of the patient continued grave and only the slightest hopes were held out for her recovery. .In spite of every possible care the patient slowly sank and passed away quietly this morning- at an early hour.

Mrs E vans was a native of Ballarat, Victoria and 62 years of age. She came to Hokitika with her parents the late Mr. Charles Fowler, and Mrs Fowler, in the sixties .and has resided here ever since. Deceased took an active part in many of the public duties with which her husband has been connected especially in connection with local patriotic movements, and for two years was President of the local branch of the Lady Liverpool Committee, and also took n very active pa'rt in the formation of the Overseas Club. Her death will make a gap. that it will be hard to fill. The deepest sympathy will be extended to the bereaved husband, family and relatives in the sudden blow that has so bereft them. Deceased leaves a husband and family of three daughters fMisses Alice, Fanny and Margery), mother (Mrs. Fowler of Hanipden- Street) and four i brothers (Joseph ; and Oswald in Hokitika, Bert in Napier, and William at Stillwater).
