In the Commons, replying to n question Hon. Bqnar Law said lie did not trink the matter of demanding the surrender of enemy mercantile ships, equivalent to the tonnage submarined, could be discussed usefully at this stage of the war.
A BRITISH SUBMARINE
ATTACKED BY SEAPLANES

LONDON, July 9. The. Admiralty reports that a Bri-
tish submarine, patrolling on the east coast, was attacked on the afternoon of the 6th by five enemy seaplanes, with bombs and machine-gun fire. The submarine suffered oidy slight damage and was towed to harbour by another submarine. One officer and five men were killed.
CONVOYING RESULTS
Received, this dav at 8.45 a.m. LONDON, July 10. Sir Chiozza Alonev says the results of ocean convoying had continued to improve. Since its inception in January 1917, a deadweight capacity of forty-two million tons had been convoyed to British and French ports, with the loss of 1.29 per ceut.

An American steamer carrying a cargo of nitrates from Chili, was attacked by a U-boat on Afonday, 350 miles from Cape Henry. Two torpedoes narrowly missed.
