THE GOAL MINES
THE -MEN AND THE OWNERS
WELLINGTON, July Bth. i To coail-mincrs’ representatives have been conferring with the. Hons. W H. ; Berries and W. D. S. MacDonald all : day,, and no announcement has been made of any decision having been reach • vd. Apparently the union “bosses” j will not accept the employers’ offer ? which is intended to increase the outI put of coal. The employers say that j with every past increase in wages the | men have clone less work, and they are ] opposed to further increases which will J enable some men to do still less. Time !j lost now is a serious matter, hut it is ; all lost by a minority of the men. | The Government has tried to induce | tho owners to grant some concessions I without raising the proce of coal to the | public. This the owners have refused | to do, and the Government will hesijj tate before acquiescing in the raising j of the price of coal. If the owners are j compelled by the Government to meet j the unions and give increases they will ; insist on increases in price, and insist also upon a clear statement of the causes of such increases as may he necessary. The-companies profits average, it is understood, some 3.7 per cent and this percentage is reckoned withour allowance for depreciation in the assets—the coal in the seams.
