THE HAMEL SUCCESS.

LONDON, July

Sir Douglas Haig reports: This morning, southward of the Somme, we were completely successful in an operation canned out h,v some detachments of Americans and supported by tanks. We gained possession of the Woods Vaire and Hamel, and the village of Hamel, in conjunction with the operation the Australians attacked eastward of Ville sur Anere, and completely succeeded. Our lines were advanced 500 yards on a 1200 yards front. Prisoners captured in these, operations exceed one thousand. Many N machine guns and other material were, also secured.

BRITISH REPORT

LONDON, July 5

Sir Douglas Haig reports that the total prisoners for Thursday’s successful operation on the Somme exceeds 1300, and one field guii, while a hundred machine guns have already been counted. The counter attack on our new positions eastward of Hamel on the night of the 4th of July were easily repulsed. We successfully raided Beau-mont-llamel sector and repulsed _ an attempted raid in the neighbourhood of Strazzele.

SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS MADE

LONDON, July 5

Sir Douglas Haig reports that the number of prisoners captured during operations on the Ith of July on the Somme by heavily bombing the German positions throughout the previous night, and machine gunning and bombing from a low altitude tile enemy troops and transports. During the actual operations we destroyed eleven machines and drove down ten uncontrollable. Four British machines engaged in that area are missing. All of these engaged in other parts of the front returned.
