A FRIENDLY COMPETITION.

WESTLAND V. GREY

A COPPER TRAIL

It has been decided to hold copper trail competition from HokitikS to Greymouth between the Westland and Grey districts for patriotic purposes. The event was resolved upon yesterday and the preliminaries are now being arranged between the two districts. The Hokitika Liverpool Committee met at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The. Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry) was present by invitation, and presided. Mrs Butler (President of the Liverpool Committee) explained that it was necessary to raise funds for the Christmas and Easter gift parcels. A copper trail had been suggested as a novel means to attract popular attention to the object in view with the idea of securing the required financial help. The meeting agreed to go on; with the proposal, and in that connection hold a competition with the Grey district, it being stated that the friendly rivalry thereby infused would lead to a wider interest in the project and a greater sum raised for the special object to be attained—funds for gift parcels. The details of the scheme were discussed at some length. Mr Evans explained that Greymouth desired to enter into a friendly competition and had been informed of the wish of the Liverpool Committee at this end to take the matter up. Tile competition would,' therefore, ho arranged. It could he district wide as far as Westland was concerned, from the Otira and the Teremakau in the north down to Jackson Bay. This area would include the. three interior Boroughs and the County of Westland. The Grey district would include;, the

Grey County and the three interior Boroughs. A penny was the basis of competition, tjlrirty pennies gomg to the yard. The competition was to lay as many miles of pennies as possible within a given time. Various suggestions were, mndo in regard to items to augumcnt the funds..

These included some novel ideas which

will be developed as the competition progresses. It was decided to devote July preparations, and hold the competition throughout August, winding up on Saturday 31st prox. It was resolved to add largely to the existing Committeo for the occasion. The Ladies’ Literary Club are to be invited to join in force also the. heads of •ill local bodies in the Westland dis-

ic-t, including also, all clubs, associa-

tions, committees etc. The active cooperation of the schools is to be specially asked for, the returns from each school to be kept separate, and a district competition to be held in this respect relative, to the average return per scholar on the roll strength. A meeting is to be held as early as possible of the angumented committeo to further the details, which will include also nrrajig.ements for dances, euchres.-pictures, teas and other social events to augment the funds. The event will not be unlike a queen competition in that everybody can help, and every pan of the district can do

its bit to swell a fund which will be all for so worthy a cause—the comfort of the men at the front. At the Grey end. organisation is taking shape also. There the Mayoress, (Mis Lynch) has been asked to convene a meeting of ladies and put the project in hand. The Grevnioutli Patriotic Society will be assisting, and the arrangements in that quarter is sure to go with a bang. It remains for the Westland people to be. up and doing. In the remaining days of July all the preliminaries should be fixed and the whole district organised. All are well interested in seeing Westland do as well as can be expect, and if everybody helps, Westland will do more than most people expect. The country people should not wait for any invitation, but bestir them selves without delay. Mrs J. Butler is the President of the Westland organi- j sation and Miss Perry, honorary secret- ! ary. Both ladies are anxious to hear j from, willing workers in the country ! ready to help, and all enquiries will have prompt attention on their part, j There are many willing patriotic work- ; era all though Westland, and this is an j opportunity where there can do some- | thing to help “Our Boys.” The gifts j sent by the Liverpool Committee all . through the year, go straight to the . Officers Commanding the West Coast- | era, and it is amongst our own men 1 that the goods are distributed. This ' personal work should command the full- ' est distinct support, and the result of . the Copper Trail should be a pleasing surprise to all connected with it. j WHAT THE PENNIES CAN DO. !
