THE YEAR’S HARVEST. LONDON, July 1. In the House of Commons, Mr C W. Prothero, replying to a quest P
admitted that there was a risk of a large proportion of the harvest being ungathered owing to labour shortage. The Government had decided not t > enforce the notices calling up agriculturists untiF'nftcr the harvest. The Board of Agriculture is organising a supply of agricultural volunteers including convalescent British and Dominion soldiers.
A SENSATIONAL DISCUSSION. (Received This l>»v at- 11.25. a.m.) LONDON, July 2. . In the House of Commons, on the motion for the adjournment of the debate on the combing out of agriculturalists, Mr Prothero amplifying his earlier answers, said he believed we shall not lose much of the harvest owing to shortage of labour. At any rate ) it is necessary to take the 30,000 already called up, though other agriculturalists will only be taken after the harvest. The men combed out’are only four per cent of the total employed on tho land. When the German prisoners are added, there will be more labour for agriculture than at November,; 1916. Mr Prothero startled the House by saying that the men taken now would bo in thc i firing line bv the middle of September, which might be the most critical moment.
Several speakers hotly denounced the suggestion that the men would be given only three months training.
Hon Donar Law said most men were given three months training at home, though some were sent to France after ten weeks. The principle was to give now troops at least' another month’s training in France. No lads of 18 were sent into the firing line until they had at least Tour months’ training. Hon Bonar Law continued: —“Don’t think we are in the last ditch, but the whole of the German strategy is based on an attempt, to wear out our reserves, and it is Government’s duty to make certain that we do not suffer such a defeat ns would render the 1918 campaign useless.” The adjournment was negatived.
