ASSISTING DESERTION.
ALLEGATION AGAINST A FARMER.

George Perrett, farmer, of Ala hoe, appealed before tbe Magistrate today charged that, on 25th, at Featlicrston, lie did takeaway from Feathorstoii camp Private Edward John Perrett, a member of tbe Expeditionary Force, with intent to evade the continuation of the service of tbe reservist in that force. Seconrl-Lieiit Parker, attached to the Headquarters {staff at Fealhtrston, trave evidence that, Private Petret; returned from final have on April '23rd. A certified copy of a Court of Enquiry at Fentherstim damp on May 21st in reference to Private Perron was produced. John Morris Hovind, a member of the Expeditionary Force, deposed that on Api il 25th, witness, in company with the accused Perrett and Private Perrett, left Featheisioii cntnp to go to Mahoe. They walked to Grey town ami secured a motor-car. leaving between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. They breakfasted at Jlaweia, and arrived at Mahoe about 10 a.m. i ext day. Private Perrett and witness remained in Perrett’s paddock, ihe latter bringing them food. Perrett, seur, paid the taxi driver. Witmss was punished on his return to camp
Cross-examined, witness said that he had given himself up to the authorities about three weeks ago. He admitted that Peirett, sour., had suggested that both should go back to camp.
Thomas Lawson Elder, taxi driver, of Grey town, said that he was engaged by Perrett, seur., who paid, witness £lO and a few shillings. Nothing was said about the soldiers dividing the expenses of the car. Jfot bought, when he reached Unworn, that something wtts wrong by the conduct of the party. Major Box, Group Commander, said that Hovind gave himself up. but Private Perrett had not. yet- been found. Three constables also gave evidence.
Accused pleaded not, guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial, bail being allowed, accused in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each.
