DROWNED
CHRISTCHURCH, June 29. James Butcher, a single man, aged fifty, was drowned in the Avon river last night.

In the House of Commons in a debate on the hardships of conscription on men over forty-five, Mr. Lloyd George replying, said that the elder men were needed for work behind the fighting lines. It would be folly to put then) in the trenches. It was true that the Americans were coming, and they preferred to he brigaded with British divisions. hut thnt was on the distinct understanding that,., when the comb out was completed, the British would take the place of the Americans, who then would form their own divisions. That was the honourable ttndertaking under which President Wilson readily sent a very large force of Americans to Prance.
