The Council of Education carried the following motions: — “That in tho opinion of this Council it would he in the interests of efficiency and economy for the Education Dopnitment to undertake the supplies of stationery requisites for use in public schools.” “That- the position of Director of Education should be the most responsible and most highly paid in the Education Service. He should be regarded as head of the teaching profession, He should be selected from the most highly qualified education students and thinkers, and in order to attract qualified men, the salary should not be less than say £1,500 a year.”

“That more use should be. made in the schools of some system of selfgovernment, with affording concrete illustrations of fundamental facts of social problems, in the daily intercourse of members of the school and commonwealth, and that to this end, a suggested scheme of Self-Government suitable for use in schools should he prepared, and circulated amongst the schools, but that its adoption in whole or part, and with, or without modification. should bo optional, and that in cases, where it is adopted, teachers should be asked to report ns to results.”
