FLOOD AT GORE

GORE, This Day. As an outcome of recent heavy rains, up country, tho Mataura river has commenced to fill steadily and slowly since yesterday morning and reached its height at about 5 a.m. to-day when the flood water got into tho town through the railway culvert on the M’aimoa branch of the line. A score or more houses wore affected up to a depth of one foot on the floor. The business portion was not reached. : The river is now falling. ; It is expected that the water that j came through the culvert will be drained off to-morrow morning. Rev. Bates. Meteorologist, is at Gore, at present, and " has made arrangements for flood reports from stations up country.

A LAD’S ESCAPADE

/ AUCKLAND, This Day. A boy under fifteen years of age, employed in a large city shop appeared at the Magistrate’s Court, charged with attempting to obtain money by unlawful means. He had pestered one of his employers customers, a lady well known in Society, by ringing her up on the telephone, when he proposed she should meet him by .appointment. Acting cm advice the lady agreed, choosing tho Domain as the rendezvous. At the U appointed the boy found a detective awaiting him. He admitted ho had a revolver loaded and hoped to get money by intimidation. The Magistrate said the boy 1 ■ evidently been influenced by trashy literature, and committed him to TVeraroa training farm.
