PHILIP GIBS’ ACCOUNT.
[p K n PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.J A DARING ATTACK. (Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, Juno 1"Mr Phillip Gibbs writes that the Suffolk* aud Gordons at La Bassee Canal made a daring attack on a front of two miles, and secured two hundred prisoners and 25 machine guns. The sector is chiefly a mining village and slag heaps, with shell broken pit heads. The German defence is based on linked shell craters and machine gun posts. The defenders were notorious as belonging to the Eigbteoenth Reserve Division, who were responsible for the campaign of frightfulness at Louvain and Termonde in 1914. Our attack was carried out in (he darkness, and utterly surprised the Germans!"" Many were prisonered before they could get their arms. Others fought bravely in the shell craters and were bayoneted at their posts.
