LATE LOCALS.

.Messrs T. Armstrong and C'., Ltd, of Christchurch distribute with this issue an inset containing particulars of weir annual winter sale. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Ford took place to Loss cemetery/ on Saturday afternoon. There was :> representative gathering of Triends from all around the district. The Rev. Yvilson conducted the services at the church and graveside. In an anti-shouting case heard at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, a witness, who judging by his accent, claimed Scotland as his birthplace, said, during his evidence: “I was' most concerned about losing my drink, which I had left on the counter during the excitement. I had paid Od for nothing and that hurt me more than anything else.”

Writing; from Somewhere in France on April 9th, Lieut. R. L. Wilson O/C XIII Coy., in a letter to Mrs Wm. 15utler, President of the Lady Liverpool Committee at Hokitika says:—“On behalf of all ranks in 13th North Canterbury and Westland Coy, I wish to thank you muchly for the 24 pairs of socks and a balaclava forwarded by your Committee and which arrived safely by last night’s mail. I wish you t& convey to the knitters our warmest thanks and marked appreciation for those splendid gifts— not only for these hut also for past favours—The work done by all at home for “the boys” out here cannot be too highly praised. In this particular case, the Hokitika parcels were warmly welcomed for they arrived at a time when conditions are not the best—mud and slush every-wherc-~and of late have not had the convenience for a regular supply of dry socks, etc., hence, the reason why these parcels are worth their weight in gold. Again thanking you for your thoughtfulness and kindness.”
