There was perfect weather yesterday lor the holiday, after a couple of stormy days. There were a number of visitors toMown, a golf match, a football match and the Band concert in the. evening each drawing supporters. The day passed off quietly. The Town Band, supplemented by It number of visiting members of the Grey Band played a number of Selections in Revell Street on Saturday night. Yesterday afternoon', the combined bauds again enlivened the streets with ah excellent musical programme, also playing in the evening, prior to the concert- in the Opera House. Lieut Col. Humphries M. C., D.C.M. whose death was report last week was some years ago a prominent member of the Christchurch Football Club and. as a forward represented that club in tho Canterbury Rugby Union’s senior competition, and also represented Canterbury, ' ■;
Sergeant Hubert S, (“Join”) Turtill. whose death is recorded at tile front was the-well-known Christchurch fullback. Turtill’s wife resides at St, Helen’s England, and his mother in Bedfordshire, “Jum” being her third son. His two brothers reside in New Zealand, one being Mr. A. W. Turtill, of Biecavton, and the other Mr T. J. Turtill, Greymouth.
A nominal roll of soldiers who are returning to New Zealand this month, draft- No. 10(3 was issued by tile Base Records on Saturday. The Acting-Post mastor-Genera 1 announces that tho following, mails from New Zealand have been lost at seat-Thirty-one. parcel receptacles for the United Kingdom, and 208 for the army base post offices; two bags of letters for the United Kingdom, including a few registered: 66, bags of newspapers for the United Kingdom, and 3d "for tho army base post offices. This mail con. tained parcels which wore received in Wellington between March 13th and 20th, and newspapers and specially addresse correspondence between March 16th and 22nd.
Tho death of Mrs Moss, wife of Mr. G. W. Moss took place at Masterton on Saturday morning. The deceased with her husband, who established the well-known form of G. AY. Moss and C'o. arrived in Groymouth in 1865, and was one of the leading singers and musicians. Deceased who was 80 years of age had only been ailing Tor three or four days, and had a seizure on Wednesday last from which she never rallied. She leaves a sorrowing husband and family of two sons and five daughters. The sons are Messrs Geo. T. Moss (Greyinouth) and H. The County Chairman (Mr B. Ward) County Clerk, (Mr 1). J. Evans), and Roadman Millner left yesterday for South Westland, whore, the Chairman will inspect a number of matters requiring attention. Mr G. Ferguson was to join the party on the. way. The party go as far south as Wftilio, and are expected back on Thursday.
An interesting football match took place on Cass Square yesterday afternoon between teams representing the Grey Star Juniors and Hokitika players, After a elose and ineresting game Hokitika, proved the winners by 8 points (a try by Powell, converted by Williams, who also kicked a penalty goal), to 7 points (a potted goal by Walton and a try by- Steele A Mr H. Harkcr had charge of the game. An accident happened yesterday at Kumara to Mr Fred Raymond. He was engaged in falling a tree when a large decayed limb fell, striking him on the head and rendering him unconscious. The injuries led to considerable, hemorrhage from the mouth and nose. Dr Fleming was sent for and on arrival found the injured man suffering from concussion of the head. He promptly gave every possible attention to the sufferer.
A sudden death tpok place this morning; at' Kumara, Mrs Catherine Way, wite of Mr G. B. Way, butcher, passing away. Some four years ago the deceased had a paralytic stroke and had been unable to help herself. Yesterday she was apparently in her usual health, but suddenly passed away this morning. Dr Fleming was sent- for, hut on arrival could only announce that life was extinct. Deceased was 74 years of age,
and was a very old resident of'the district.
The Princess Theatre was crowded to the doors last evening with a holiday crowd, including a large percentage of children, Charlie Chaplin being on the programme, which included further chapters oF the serial “The Secret Kingdom,’’ an interesting Pathe Gazette and further Alpine scenery in South Wesaland, including the Franc, Joseph glaciers. The star feature “Broadway Arizona” was a. clever drama in which Olive Thomas took a leading part. The final film was “Easy Street,” with Charlie Chaplin as the policeman, and judging by the unlimited laughter, was of great interest to the onlookers.
Amongst those who are returning to the Dominion in the next draft- is 2nd Lieutenant. Samuel Frickleton, of Blackball. Lieut. Frickleton was the second New Zealander in this war to win the greatest military distinction ‘which it- is possible for any British soldier to gain. time of his gaining the Cross he hold the rank of lancycorporal in the Wellington Infantry Regiment, and was recommended for tlie honour for knocking out two enemy machine-gun teams single-handed thereby saving hundreds of lives and enabling the advance, which had been tern- : porarily checked to continue. After lie- ' ing promoted to sergeant, Frickleton 1 was sent to England to sit for a com- 1 mission, which lie gained. He is now being sent hack to New Zealand for duty.
The entertainment in the Opera House last evening in aid of the funds of the Municipal Hand, drevv a large audience. The programme was mainly provided by Gt'eymoiltli visitors! the Grey mouth Citizens Band -members making the arrangements, and a capital entertainment was given. The soloists met with very flattering receptions, the humorous songs of Mr J. Smith being specially marked for appreciation, most vigorous recalls being given. The coin*binod • Grey mouth and Town Hands played a number oi‘ selections prior to the entertainment. Richards, returned thanks to the performers and audience tor their assistance and patronage. The National Anthem brought the gathering to a conclusion.
